U. S. Customs and Border Protection

As part of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) comprehensive effort to improve the security of our nation's borders while enhancing legitimate travel, CBP has launched the Reporting Offsite Arrival – Mobile (ROAM)

What does this mean to us? You and your guests now have an easier, faster way of clearing into the US when traveling
to and from Canada by boat, plane or snowmobile 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

Once the decision is made to put in the ice bridge (once the ice is deemed thick enough and safe), Canadians start at Milford Haven and Drummond Islanders start at the Drummond Island Yacht Haven, burying trees in the ice until they meet in the middle. This signals the beginning of a time where snowmobiles can travel across the ice to Milford Haven on St. Joseph's Island in Ontario. This bridge will stay open until the ice degrades in the spring and travel becomes hazardous.

The free ROAM application enables video conferencing, if necessary, with officers at the Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan Port of Entry when making entry by snowmobile.  The ROAM application for snowmobiles is currently limited to the EUP.

The ROAM app also qualifies as an Alternative Inspection System that satisfies the operator's legal requirement to report for face-to-face inspection in accordance with 8 CFR 235.1 with some exceptions:
  • Travelers who require an I-94 entry document;
  • Travelers who wish to obtain a cruising license;
  • Travelers who must pay duties on imported goods; and
  • Other circumstances as applicable.

To use the ROAM app, travelers input their biographic, conveyance, and trip details and submit their trip for CBP Officer (CBPO) review. The CBPO may initiate a video chat to further interview travelers. Once the CBPO reviews the trip, travelers will receive a push notification and an email with their admissibility decision and next steps, if applicable.  If it is determined that an in-person inspection will need to be conducted, snowmobilers may be directed to an alternative site and wait for officers to arrive from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

An iPad with the ROAM application has been installed at Drummond Island Yacht Haven (Drummond Island Yacht Haven will not be staffed by CBP officers).

To use CBP ROAM on your personal smart device, download the app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
