We Love Our Outdoor Enthusiasts:
We are excited to welcome both snowmobiles and Jeeps in the winter. We studied the trail systems and have come up with winter ORV routes that will have minimal impact on the snowmobile trails. These routes are all on State of Michigan land and only briefly intersect each other. Due to the safety issues discussed below, it is imperative that trail riders adhere to the routes we have highlighted on the map link below. We are working closely with the local snowmobile grooming association, as well as the local ORV club to make this work for everyone. Snowmobile trails are funded by the State of Michigan and are maintained by special trail groomers, which keep the trails cleared, packed, and smooth for snowmobiles to travel. The snowmobile trail route goes on both public and private land. Seasonal leases are negotiated between the private landowners, the State of Michigan, and the local grooming association. These leases are specifically for snowmobile use. The snowmobile trail lease agreements will be terminated if wheeled vehicles are operated on private land. The ORV trail system operates solely on State of Michigan land. There are some areas where the snowmobile trails share the ORV routes.

We have identified two areas where ORV Routes have very little impact on the snowmobile trails. Only travel on these two routes during the winter. This will allow great trails both for snowmobilers and off-roaders alike.
ORV Routes only cross State land. These routes are marked with numbers from 1 to 27 on the Recreation Map. Snowmobile trails can cross both State land and private land. Private landowners are paid to allow access onto their property. This is only for non-wheeled vehicles (snowmobiles). These trails are marked with number such as 492, 493, etc. Private landowners do not give wheeled vehicles permission to enter their property. |
Turtle Ridge Off-road Park
In addition to the two routes on State Land, Turtle Ridge Off-Road Park at the Drummond Island Resort and Conference Center is now open year-round. For park maps, entry fees, and special lodging rates for winter wheelers, visit their website. |
